How big is a Boxing Ring ?

Standardized Boxing rings measure from 49oo mm x 4900 mm ( 16x 16 ft )  to a generally accepted maximum of 61oo mm x 6100 mm ( 25 x 25 ft ).

This measurement is taken from the inside line of the the ropes – see illustration above.

Typically boxing rings are set on a platform of raised between 910 mm and 1220 mm above the ground with a minimum 2000 mm clearance around the ring.

The ring must have a flat and level floor, usually created from 25 mm thick plywood layer over a strong steel frame. 25 mm foam and a final canvas cover is then placed over the plywood floor.

The canvas floor will extend at least 460 mm outside the rope line.

The ropes that are used to encircle the boxing area and flexible and between 30 and 50 mm thick. They are sleeved in a soft non abrasive material and then tightly strung bewteen the fours corner posts using special shackles.

You will typically see both 3 and 4 ropes on a boxing ring, when you see three ropes they are placed at 400 mm,  800 mm and 1300 mm spacings, four rope setups are are at 406 mm, 711 mm , 1016 mm and 1320 mm secured to the padded steel posts at each of the four corners of the ring.

It is recommended that Boxing rings have approximately 500 lux for training and 1000 lux ( the measured units of lighting “brightness” ) for competition.
