The floor of a boxing ring is constructed of several “layers” – the exact configuration of the layers will be determined by the engineering methodology using in designing the ring however in general the layers are as follows.

Boxing Ring Floor Configuration

Raised Platform – As most boxing rings are of the “raised floor” configuration the floor will rest on a frame constructed of either steel or wood. Most new rings today are constructed with a steel frame providing the advantages of steel and “modular” construction allowing the ring to be able to be relocated quickly and easily.

Layer 1 – Plywood Floor:

Sheets of Marine Grade Plywood between 20 and 25mm thick provide as laid in a staggered pattern on top of the steel platform, a retaining lip runs around the outside perimeter of the platform to prevent the plywood from moving once in place.

Layer 2 – Foam:

A 20 mm – 25 mm layer of high density foam either in roll form or the interlocking  “jigsaw” style is placed over the plywood floor of the boxing ring.

Note: Various sanctioning bodies specify slight differences in the thickness of the floor foam.

Layer 3 – Boxing Ring Canvas

The floor canvas in a boxing ring  is described in measurements of  ” ounce ” A rating of between 15 oz and 18 oz is typical in a very high quality canvas floor. The canvas will require lashing eyelets evenly spaced at a maximum of 300 mm intervals so that it maybe be securely attached to the boxing platform effectively sandwiching the layers of materials together.
